The current (1998) Director General of CERN, Chris Llewellyn Smith (third from left), joined the spokesmen (or soon-to-be spokesmen) of five of Europe's six major experiments at particle colliders for a photo-call at the 29th International Conference on High Energy Physics (ICHEP'98) in Vancouver. By chance, they are all from the UK! From left to right they are:
Brian Foster, Bristol University, spokesman for the ZEUS experiment at the DESY laboratory in Germany from 1 January 1999.
John Dainton, Liverpool University, (then) spokesman for the H1 experiment at the DESY laboratory.
Chris Llewellyn Smith*, Director General of CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (until 1 January 1999).
Peter Dornan, Imperial College, London, (then) spokesman for the ALEPH experiment at CERN.
David Plane, CERN, (then) spokesman for the OPAL experiment at CERN.
Wilbur Venus, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, (then) spokesman for the DELPHI experiment at CERN.

(Since 1999, Provost of University College London.)
