Nearly 2000 physicists and engineers are involved in building ATLAS, a huge new detector for the Large Hadron Collider ( LHC ) at the European particle physics laboratory, CERN, near Geneva. They come from some 220 universities and laboratories around the world, in 39 countries, on six continents! In this image all members of the team who attended a collaboration meeting at CERN in February 2001 are seen on the balconies in Building 40 at CERN, which house offices for researchers working both on ATLAS and CMS (another detector for the being built for the LHC). ATLAS will detect the collisions of high-energy protons in the LHC, where it passes through the heart of the apparatus. It is due to begin operation in 2006.
