CERN, Europe's research centre for particle physics, is to continue running the Large Electron Positron accelerator, LEP, at its highest energies for a month longerr than anticipated. This is because there are hints that experiments at LEP may have seen the long-sought Higgs particle, which may help to explain the orgin of mass. This image shows one of three "events" in the ALEPH detector at LEP, that is consistent with the production and decay of the Higgs particle.
