The "father of DESY", Professor Willibald Jentschke died on March 11, 2002, only a few months after his 90th birthday (born December 6, 1911), which he had celebrated at DESY - the German particle physics laboratory in Hamburg. Jentschke built up the research center, and was its director for 10 years. He was also Director General of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research from 1971 to 1975. This photo shows all the chairmen of the DESY board of directors since the institution's founding. Jentschke is in the centre, with from left to right: professors Herwig Schopper (1973-1980), Wolfgang Paul (1971-1972), Jentschke (1959-1970), Volker Soergel (1981-1993) and Bjørn H. Wiik (1993-1999).
