Masterclasses

The National Particle Physics Masterclass

Dates for the 2010 Masterclasses will be announced in the autumn.

The National Particle Physics Masterclass is a popular series of one day events for sixth form students and their teachers, run by practicing particle physics researchers at various institutes all over the country and co-ordinated through the Institute of Physics.  Since the inception of the programme in 1997, they have proved to be stimulating and informative for thousands of students and hundreds of schools.  These classes provide excellent support for the material on Particle Physics which is in many 16+ curricula.

Programmes at different institutes reflect their particular interests and facilities, but typically programmes include:

  • talks by particle physicists which convey some of the excitement of working in a rapidly-moving field, where current experiments include a close study of antimatter and the search for the origin of mass.
  • hands-on experience of the interactive graphical display programs that particle physicists use at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, CERN, using software specially written for schools.

They are organised by the High Energy particle Physics Group of the Institute of Physics and take place in March - May each year.
