Resources
STFC have a support programme for teachers, including a schools' officer who can help to locate resources, arrange talks or visits and answer queries relating to particle physics in schools.
For a comprehensive guide to educational resources see the STFC Resource Guide for teaching Particle Physics, available on the web.
The Institute of Physics 'Teaching Advanced Physics' project has a set of lesson notes for teaching Particle Physics. While they are aimed at those new to teaching students in the 16-19 age range, they will also be helpful for those teaching Particle Physics for the first time.
There is a comprehensive list of useful weblinks on the STFC website.
The list below gives a short selection of useful resources and weblinks.
Posters, Publications etc.
STFC posters - a range of free posters, some with teacher notes and class activities.
Particle Physics Summary Sheets (Royal Holloway University of London) – a set of (low-priced or free) colourful A3 and A4 sheets which provide a concise summary of important points about quarks and leptons, forces, particle accelerators, particle detectors, and particle physics and the big bang.
The Standard Model of Particle Physics (The Contemporary Physics Educational Project, CPEP) - a comprehensive and colourful survey of all the particles and forces involved in the Standard Model.
TV Programmes
Teachers' TV - 'In Search of Giants': A series of three 15 minute films about particle physics, including the research taking place at the LHC. Presented by Dr. Brian Cox, these are a great way to introduce and get an overview of the subject.
'In Search of Giants' has also been edited into 15 short clips, which are now available from YouTube.
A series of six video shorts looking at some of the questions the LHC will explore are available from Lab Reporter.
Software
The Lancaster Particle Physics Package – simulates collisions and shows how particle physicists use basic principles (e.g. conservation of momentum) in analysing particle events.
Hands On CERN and the Manchester Software Package – these help students to understand the principles of particle detectors and allow them to use real date from collisions at CERN.
Web
Particle Detectives - is a comprehensive schools resource about the Large Hadron Collider. It includes a simulation of the LHC, lesson plans and class activities, vodcasts from scientists working on the project, curriculum links and more.
Schoolscience – contains clear explanations about Particle Physics at levels suitable for 14-16 and 16+ students. http://www.schoolscience.co.uk/content/index.asp
The Particle Adventure – a useful site for exploring many aspects of particle physics.http://particleadventure.org/
CERN
European Laboratory for Particle Physics - for information about CERN, Educational Resources from CERN and the CERN Visits Service.
Introductory PowerPoint presentation about particle physics, based upon the former LEP accelerator at CERN - http://public.web.cern.ch/Public/Objects/Chapters/Education/OnlineResources/Keyhole/Welcome.html.
