Knowledge Transfer Professionals

The work that we undertake as Knowledge Transfer professionals is thus to understand the types of technology being developed by the Particle Physics community and their potential outcomes both in industry and in other sectors such as healthcare and security research.

Typical areas of outcome for technologies originating in Particle Physics are:

  • Analytical Instrumentation
  • Electronics, Information and Communication Technologies
  • Healthcare and Life Sciences
  • Security and Defence Systems
  • Aerospace and Space industry
  • Financial Services
  • Media, Film and Games industry.

Knowledge Transfer isn’t all about setting up spinout companies, although I have been involved with well over a dozen in the past 6 years.  The typical ‘vectors’ through which knowledge transfers into industry are:

  • Collaborative research & development projects
  • Skills transfer as companies recruit skilled staff
  • Formation of a spinout company
  • Licensing of Intellectual Property
  • Consultancy advice to companies
  • Secondment of staff between academic and industrial research groups.

We always work alongside the physicists, engineers and IT experts who develop the technology and organise a variety of large conferences, smaller workshops and seminars alongside individual visits to research institutes and companies.

Further Information

If you would like to learn more about Knowledge Transfer from Particle Physics, you may join STFC’s KITE Club.

As STFC KITE Club Innovation Advisors, my team and I are able to help industry and academic researchers to bridge the technology divide between the worlds of high energy physics and industry.
