PPARC KITE Club - Technology and Industry News - August 2005

From the sunny beaches of Cambridge, we send you a short summer update from the PPARC KITE Club:

1.    New PIPSS Scheme announced
2.    Date set for Advanced Instrumentation Workshop
3.    September / October TopCat meetings include accelerator technology, space environment and autonomous systems

1 New PIPSS Scheme Announced

The PPARC Industrial Programme Support Scheme (PIPSS) has been refocused to provide additional support for Knowledge Transfer.  For the first time, both academic institutions and industrial organisations will be able to be Principal Investigators and consortium Lead Organisations.

The overall objective of the new PIPSS is to facilitate the transfer of technology developed in pursuit of the PPARC science programme.  In other words, to transfer PPARC developed technologies to other academic disciplines and/or industrial applications.  This includes our specific efforts to promote collaborations with the healthcare and defence / security communities.

There will be four closing dates for PIPSS funding: 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October.  PIPSS now provides a maximum project value of £100k per annum, over a period not exceeding three years.

Another new feature is the introduction of Mini-PIPSS which provides the facility to make an application for a small project, up to £60k over a period not exceeding 12 months, at any time and receive a quick decision.

Details of the new PIPSS scheme are now available at www.pparc.ac.uk/In/Sc/PIPSS_announcement.asp and support is provided by the Industry Coordinator Team.

Applications for Mini-PIPSS may be made from the 1 December 2005 and the first closing date for PIPSS will be the 1 January 2006 (applications may be made from 1 December 2005)

2 Date set for Advanced Instrumentation Workshop

The PPARC KITE Club Advanced Instrumentation workshop is to be held on Wednesday 30th November 2005 in central London.  Please note this date in your diary.  A full announcement will follow in early September.

3 Autumn TopCat Meetings include topics of interest to the PPARC community

The next call for applications to the RCUK Basic Technology Research Programme is anticipated later this year.  The Technology Champions team is pleased to announce a second series of 'TopCat' meetings which aim to support networking and the building of consortia to apply for this funding stream.  Several of the meetings should be of particular interest to readers:

Autonomous Systems - 3rd October 2005
PPARC interest: Space Exploration and Space Science

Autonomous Systems are advanced robotic techniques which enable systems to accomplish goals without human intervention.  This meeting is aimed at those currently undertaking developments across this field and to those who have an interest in the adaptation and application of these systems to further their research activities.

Systems in Extreme Environments - 18th October 2005
PPARC interest: Particle Physics, Space Science

The objective of this meeting is to draw together people who have interests in systems, instruments and sensors which are required to operate in extreme environments, such as space, subterranean and the deep ocean.

Molecular Labelling and Visualisation - 27th September 2005
PPARC interest: Detectors, Signal Analysis, High Performance Computing, Visualisation

This meeting may attract those involved in the development of novel chemical labels, detector systems, bioinformatics, contrast agents and molecular modelling, and may also appeal to those who have an interest in the adaptation and application of these systems to further their research activities.
